How does My Host Agent help increase my earnings?

By offering competitive commission rates and exclusive supplier partnerships, we help you maximize your income potential. See our commission tiers.

I am a new advisor. What are the initial requirements to get started?

To join My Host Agent, all new advisors must complete two primary steps before being accepted.

1. First, TICO Certification: Because we are an Ontario-based agency, provincial law requires that all advisors be TICO-certified to sell travel under our license, no matter where you live in Canada. This certification guarantees your clients are covered by the Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund, no matter which Province they reside in. You can start the process by registering for the exam here: TICO Certification Program.

2. Second, Formal Travel Education: We require enrollment in either a recognized community college travel program or the KORE™ curriculum. Once you have both your TICO certification and proof of enrollment, we would be happy to move your application forward.

In summary, completing these two steps will set you up for success as a new advisor with My Host Agent.

What is the KORE™ curriculum, and why do you recommend it for new travel agents?

The KORE™ curriculum is a modern, 100% online, and self-paced digital platform designed to prepare professionals for the travel industry. We recommend it because:

Affordability: It is significantly more cost-effective than traditional college programs.

Flexibility: It allows you to complete modules on your own time.

Comprehensive Coverage: It covers everything from airline regulations to social media marketing.

For a deeper look at how this program prepares you for your career, you can watch this overview video here.

Find out more about KORE™ and how to enroll here: Travel Advisor Training Online.

Stay fully compliant with vital licensing and regional insurance guides.

Am I an employee or independent contractor?

You are an Independent Contractor (IC), not an employee. You are a business owner partnering with My Host Agent and Total Advantage Travel & Tours.

Autonomy: You set your own hours, choose your clients, and run your business your way.

Taxes: You are responsible for your own taxes. We do not withhold source deductions; you will receive a T4A (or equivalent) for your annual filing.

Compensation: You earn income through commission splits rather than a fixed salary.

I am an Ontario-based agent; what are the legal requirements to join?

To sell travel or provide advice in Ontario, you must be TICO Certified under the Travel Industry Act. You are required to pass the TICO exam before joining our host agency.

I live in Alberta; do I still need to be TICO certified to join?

Since My Host Agent is based in Ontario, all client payments go through our Ontario trust accounts. Therefore, you need to be TICO-certified, regardless of your home province. Interprovincial laws require any agent selling travel with an Ontario license to meet the same educational standards as Ontario residents. This certification also grants your clients access to the Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund, which can reimburse them up to $5,000 if a travel supplier defaults. You can start the process by registering for the exam through the TICO Certification Program.

How do Alberta-based advisors register to sell insurance?

In Alberta, the law is strict: Independent Contractors (ICs) are not considered employees and therefore cannot sell travel insurance under a host agency’s Restricted Certificate of Authority. To legally sell insurance, an IC must hold their own individual license or be specifically covered under a business license in which the host’s Errors & Omissions (E&O) policy explicitly names and covers independent contractors. To get started, you must first register for a CIPR number and then apply for your license through the Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) portal here: AIC Portal – Apply for a License.

I am a Québec-based agent; what are the legal requirements to join?

To ensure full regulatory compliance, Québec-based advisors must hold two key certifications:

OPC Certification: In accordance with the Travel Agents Act, you must pass the mandatory exam and obtain a certificate from the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC). This process is typically administered through the ITHQ.

This is a two-step process:

1. Register for a CCV file number with the OPC here.

2. Book your mandatory exam through the ITHQ here.

TICO Certification: In addition to provincial requirements, Québec agents must also successfully complete the TICO (Travel Industry Council of Ontario) exam to join our host travel agency.

Register for the TICO Certification Program here.

By holding both credentials, you guarantee full authorization to sell travel services throughout Canada and offer your clients maximum consumer protection.

Can I join My Host Agent if I live in British Columbia?

Yes! We welcome agents from across Canada. However, because My Host Agent is an Ontario-registered agency and you are physically located in BC, you must comply with the regulations of both provinces.

Under BC law, you are considered an “Outside Sales Representative” (OSR) or “Independent Contractor,” and there are specific legal steps you must take to operate legally.

1. Mandatory Ontario (TICO) Certification

Regardless of your residency, because you are representing an Ontario-registered agency, you must meet the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) education standards.

The Requirement: You must pass the TICO Certification Exam. As of January 5, 2026, this is a single, interactive e-learning program that replaces the old two-level system.

Cost: $150.

2. British Columbia (CPBC) Licensing

Because you are conducting business from within BC, you fall under the jurisdiction of Consumer Protection BC (CPBC).

The Requirement: Every location where travel is sold in BC must be licensed. As an independent contractor, you typically operate as a “branch” under our host agency’s BC license.

Your Status: You do not need to provide your own independent $15,000 security bond; you are covered by My Host Agent’s registration, provided we are registered in BC.

3. Selling Travel Insurance in BC

If you plan to offer travel insurance to your BC-based clients, there are strict educational requirements set by the Insurance Council of BC.

The Requirement: You must pass the Council-approved travel insurance exam (administered by ACTA) and complete 2 hours of Continuing Education (CE) every year.

Exam Link: ACTA Travel Insurance Certification

4. Operational Compliance

Invoicing: All client receipts and advertisements must clearly display the host agency’s TICO and CPBC license numbers.

Compensation Fund: Processing all sales through our Ontario systems ensures your clients are protected by the Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund.

Do agents in other provinces have specific provincial exam requirements?

Requirements vary by province. While all My Host Agent advisors must pass the TICO exam, agents in British Columbia (BPCPA) or Saskatchewan may have additional local registration requirements. We recommend checking your province’s specific guidelines to ensure you are fully compliant.

What are the monthly or annual fees, and what do they include?

We charge a flat monthly fee of CAD $35. This all-inclusive fee covers your tools, support, and administrative costs. You can also view a complete list of perks on our Fees and Agent Benefits page.

Are there setup, tech, E&O insurance, or admin fees?

No. Your $35 monthly fee includes all of those costs. The only external cost is the fee for other memberships, such as applying for an IATA card, which you pay directly to IATA. We also provide the necessary letter of recommendation to support your application.

Are there any hidden or transaction-based fees?

None. We do not charge for ticketing, invoicing, or cancellations. If you decide to leave, simply give us 30 days’ notice, and we will deactivate your tools before our next billing cycle. Additionally, you can cancel your contract with our host agency for travel agents at no cost.

Commissions: My Host Agent FAQ

Learn how our competitive splits and payout schedules reward your sales.

What is the starting commission split?

New advisors start with a 70% commission split. For experienced advisors, we negotiate a split between 70% and 95%, based on sales volume. Visit our Fees & Agent Benefits page to explore our commission tiers.

Does the commission split increase over time?

Yes. Your split increases as your sales volume grows. For more details, review our specific commission tiers on the Fees & Benefits page.

When and how are commissions paid?

We pay commissions when we receive them from the supplier. Subsequently, we distribute payments to our advisors via Interac e-Transfer on a monthly basis.

Do you hold back commissions for potential chargebacks?

No, we do not hold back your earnings. If a chargeback occurs, we either deduct the amount from your future commission payments or invoice you for it. We never charge interest on chargebacks.

What happens if a supplier pays late?

We pay out commissions the moment we receive them. We work closely with preferred suppliers and rarely see delays. However, if a payment is late, we proactively contact the tour operator to ensure you are paid promptly.

Business Ownership & Portability

Keep total control over your client lists and your independent brand.

Who owns my client list and data, and is my privacy protected?

At My Host Agent, we operate on a “Your Business, Your Clients” philosophy; as a result, you retain 100% ownership of your client database and every lead you generate. We believe in a true partnership rather than a captive relationship; therefore, your professional relationships and marketing data remain your exclusive intellectual property. Regarding your privacy, we strictly guarantee that we do not market to your clients or use your database for our own solicitations. Furthermore, because you have built these relationships through your own hard work, we ensure they are protected from any internal agency interference.

If I decide to leave, can I take my clients with me without legal barriers?

Yes. You built your business and own it; as a result, we offer full portability should you ever choose to move it elsewhere. We do not believe in restrictive “non-compete” or non-solicitation clauses that prevent you from servicing your travellers at another agency. Additionally, you are free to transition your client list without any hidden “exit fees” or contractual hurdles. While we are here to support your growth, we never stand in the way of your independence; as a result, you always maintain the freedom to manage your travel consulting business on your own terms.

Flexibility & Growth: Your Host Agency for Travel Agents

Scale your business at your own pace with our adaptive career paths.

Is there a minimum sales requirement?

No. You do not need to meet minimum sales quotas to maintain your status as an advisor with us. This lets you focus on growing your business at your own pace.

Can I grow my business slowly without pressure to go full-time?

Absolutely. We support advisors at all stages. Whether you want to build a full-time career or grow your business at a slower, part-time pace, you will find the flexibility you need here.

What happens if I need to take a break from selling?

That is perfectly fine. As long as you continue to pay the $35 monthly fee, we keep your email and tool logins active and ready for you when you return. You can seamlessly pick up where you left off with your host agency for travel agents.
